What is a Comprehensive Plan?
The Comprehensive Plan is Walla Walla’s guiding document for managing growth and shaping the city’s future over the next 20 years. It outlines the vision, goals, and policies that will help us address critical issues, from housing and transportation to economic development, parks, and public services.
During the City’s work session on Nov. 4, 2024, the city detailed the steps to prepare the comprehensive plan update. Walla Walla is a fully planning city, which means the city must update its comprehensive plan in order to comply with the Growth Management Act (GMA) by December 2026 per RCW 36.70A.130(5). This 20-year planning document sets goals, policies, and actions to guide development, budgets, and public investment.
How does this Comprehensive Plan apply to you?
This plan serves as a roadmap for the city's growth and development, addressing elements such as land use, housing, transportation, economic development, and environmental stewardship, all of which affect residents. Regular updates ensure the plan remains responsive to evolving community needs, state mandates, and emerging challenges, guiding Walla Walla toward a sustainable and prosperous future.
Who is funding the Comprehensive Plan update?
The City of Walla Walla received a grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce to complete this update. The City has hired SCJ Alliance as its consultant to support the update process.
